About
Portfoliya started as a spreadsheet, because nothing else answered the question.
If you hold assets in more than one country, the ordinary tools stop being useful at exactly the point they matter. They convert everything into one currency and lose the amounts you actually hold. They have no idea that a perfectly ordinary foreign mutual fund may be a PFIC, or that a deposit abroad counts toward a threshold measured across every foreign account you own.
So the answer was a workbook — carefully built, reconciled to the cent, and increasingly difficult to maintain. Portfoliya is that workbook as software, and it still reconciles to it exactly. That was the first requirement and it remains a test that runs on every change.
What it is built on
- Money never touches floating point. Every amount is decimal arithmetic with a stated rounding rule. A tracker that is a cent out is a tracker you stop trusting.
- What you type is what is stored. Conversions are computed on the way out, never on the way in, so changing a rate updates everything and destroys nothing.
- Silence is never an all-clear. A holding in a country whose rules are not loaded says not assessed. Pretending to have checked would be the most damaging thing this product could do.
- No bank connections. Nothing to leak, and no credentials to hand over.
Who makes it
Portfoliya is made by Portfoliya LLC, an Illinois company. It is built by someone who needed it — an engineer with assets in more than one country and a spreadsheet that had outgrown itself.
